Welcome to the website of our Houseboat Shama and the Kotroo-family. My name is Nora. Although I live and study in Belgium, I try to be with my family in Kashmir during school holidays. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to live, combine and love two cultures.
I have a Belgian mother and a Kashmiri father. Therefore, I see Kashmir and Belgium as my two home-countries. Both sides of the family are precious to me. Here, I would like to introduce you to my Kashmiri family.
My father was born in Kashmir-Srinagar. As a young boy he helped his father deal with the tourists on the houseboat. My grandfather served the British when they were ruling India. He was a great cook and could make the most delicious pudding in all Srinagar and its surroundings. We still own letters from some British people who, at that time, were looking forward to the cool air and the beauty of Kashmir, away from the heat of Delhi. They wanted to make sure they had a room on our boat. The description of the menu for the dinner, when they arrived, is included.
Kashmir is one of the most magnificent places on earth. Over the years, people came from all over the world to visit Kashmir. My grandfather and father gave them a home in the houseboat. And until this day, the story goes on.
When my grandfather passed away, my father and his brothers and sisters took over the business. Now they are taking care of those who choose to stay on Houseboat Shama. This still in the spirit they learned from my grandfather: respect and honesty towards the guests, a clean environment, tasty food and most of all to be proud of the boat and the services they provide.
As the houseboat is a family-run business, my nephews and nieces are now at an age where they are also getting involved. And guess what, so am I!
I can honestly say I love it. One day, I hope you and me can meet in Kashmir at the Shama Houseboat.

PS: a lot of people all over the world remember us as the Kotroo family with Sumatra Houseboat. Since 1996 our family takes care of Shama Houseboat.
